The Reading/Writing Lab provides students an opportunity to increase reading and writing efficiency through the instructional courses listed below. Individualized lessons place emphasis on increasing vocabulary, reading rate, and comprehension skills. Based on entry-level assessment results, students may be required to complete ASC 82 Effective Reading, ASC 84 Critical Reading, ASC 87 College Writing Prep, and ASC 88 Composition Lab, a companion-writing lab, for students enrolled in English 110. 

These classes are open to any student who would like to become a more effective student.

ASC 82 Effective Reading (3 credits): This course provides strategies to improve reading efficiency by building vocabulary and improving basic reading, writing and study skills.

ASC 84 Critical Reading ( 2 credits): This college reading course emphasizes improving reading comprehension, efficiency, and speed through practice of literal, critical, and inferential reading skills. Through instruction and practice, students learn the skills involved in critical thinking and reading processes. Upon recommendation of the instructor, this course may be repeated for additional credit.

ASC 87 College Writing Prep (3 credits): This course helps students gain the skills of paragraphing and essay writing need for college level composition. Through conferencing, the instructor and student will identify and prioritize writing problems. This course offers a transition to entry-level English composition course.

ASC 87L Writing Skills Lab (1 credit): This course is a companion course for College Writing Prep. Students will gain grammar and sentence-level writing skills.  Students will apply these skills to their College Writing Prep written assignments.

ASC 88 Composition Lab (1 credit): This course is taken in conjunction with English 110. The course provides supplemental and developmental instruction for students taking English 110. This course will need to be re-taken if English 110 is re-taken.

Reading Lab
Reading/Writing Tutoring

Tutoring Writing Lab offers walk-in instructional and computer support for English courses and for writing projects in any content area. English support includes literary analysis, essay writing, computerized study of vocabulary, and English as a Second Language.

What does the Writing Lab offer students?
  • Individual assistance for writing assignments in any class at the college
  • Discussion of ways to make writing more clear and effective
  • Help with finding and revising patterns of errors
  • Help with using the Internet for academic research
  • Use of reference materials such as dictionaries and writing handbooks
  • Literature analysis
