Mission:
To meet our federally-mandated responsibility to provide equal access and opportunity to all academic programs and campus activities for students with disabilities at North Dakota State College of Science.

Laws impacting post secondary education:
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

Disability Support Services Functions:
  • Provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. These accommodations are provided free of charge.
  • Promote the philosophy of equal access and opportunity with all North Dakota State College of Science administrators, faculty, staff and students.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff on issues regarding disability.
  • Refer eligible students with disabilities to academic support services (e.g. Division Academic Counselors, Academic Services Center). Encourage self-advocacy for students with disabilities to increase their independence and level of self-sufficiency.
  • Make referrals to outside agencies when appropriate (e.g. Vocational Rehabilitation, Counseling Services).

DSS Documentation:
Acceptable documentation should include your most recent psychological evaluation, IEP (if applicable), or medical report from a physician that clearly states a diagnosis and makes suggestions for accommodations. An IEP alone is not sufficient documentation at the post secondary level. Documentation is usually considered "current" if it is within the past three years, but the age of acceptable documentation is dependent upon the disabling condition, the current status of the student, and the student's request for accommodations. Documentation should be from an appropriate credentialed professional. For additional information see Guidelines for Disability Documentation. Verification by another institution or organization does not guarantee eligibility at the North Dakota State College of Science.

Access to Accommodations:
Some examples of accommodations may include note taker services, taped texts, oral testing, scribe services, extended time on tests, enlarging of printed text and removal of physical barriers. To arrange for accommodations you must contact the Disability Support Services office at (701) 671-2623

Timelines:
Both the request for the accommodation and the provision of the accommodation must be appropriate and timely. The Disability Support Services office will address requests for accommodations in a timely manner, but the institution cannot guarantee the availability of appropriate accommodations without ample lead time to make preparations and/or investigate resources.

For specialized services, such as sign language interpreting and/or captioning, the request must be made via telephone, e-mail, or in person, at least 90 days in advance of date of service.

The Accessibility Support Services office needs four to six weeks advance notice to process textbooks in an alternate format.

Academic Services Center:The Academic Services Center offers a comprehensive academic skills curriculum designed to help students who need additional preparation for course work in their major field. A variety of courses are offered for credit, and walk-in help is available in many course areas. The Academic Services Center is open to all North Dakota State College of Science students.
The Academic Services Center is located on the second floor of the Mildred Johnson Library. For more information call 701- 671-2622.
