Dedicated in 1970, the Mildred Johnson Library was designed with an open central atrium, with numerous individual study areas, tables, comfortable chairs and group study rooms. Computers and printers are available for research. A color printer, fax machine, scanner and wireless access are also available. The library has DVD players and VCRs for use in the group study rooms.
The library's mission statement is to "support the curriculum of NDSCS; provide research collections and reference assistance; provide instruction in the use of research tools; and support life-long learning and personal enrichment."
The Print Collection Many of the approximately 65,000 books form a unique core of technical and services-oriented material as well as popular and leisure reading. Audiovisual titles number more than 3,000. The serials collection includes more than 200 current magazine and newspaper titles.
Major North Dakota newspapers and most of the weeklies are available in the reading area, as well as current issues of magazines.
Art Collections Displayed throughout the library are the AAUW (American Association of University Women) Art Collection and the Gewalt Oriental Art Collection. Over the years, AAUW has purchased a wide variety of paintings, prints, and mixed media pieces created by area artists. The Gewalt Collection, donated by an alumnus, consists of a number of oriental art pieces. The library also houses a collection of national flags representing the home countries of international students on campus.
