I would like to find out if my son's or daughter’s admission file is complete? The Family Rights and Privacy Act prevents NDSCS to release information to you about your student unless the student has signed a release of information form. If you would like to receive information regarding your student, please have your student complete the FERPA release form and submit it to Enrollment Services in Haverty Hall 105/106. | 2.) Why does my son or daughter need to take the COMPASS test? Assessment of student academic achievement is an accreditation requirement of the Higher Learning Commission. Student learning outcomes have been established for general education and for each program of study. They reflect what the student should know, think or be able to do at the successful conclusion of the program of study. Data is collected for each outcome and is analyzed by faculty to determine to what extent each outcome is being achieved. The goal is to improve student academic achievement continuously. Data leads to logical changes in courses, curriculum or equipment, and professional development opportunities for faculty. Assessment data will assist in determining the extent to which students are attaining the technical, transfer and general education objectives throughout the curriculum, as well as success in utilizing those skills after graduation. Advisory committees assist departments in keeping their plans of study current by identifying skills students will need to be successfully employed and to stay current in their field. It is the intent of NDSCS that all students will participate in planned assessment activities appropriate to their programs of study. Student success is tracked from entry to exit, from the time a student enrolls until he or she graduates and obtains employment or transfers to another college or university. Baseline scores in reading, writing and mathematics have been determined. Guidelines are based on ACT scores, and if further testing is indicated, the second testing is used in conjunction with ACT scores to provide placement guidelines. Placement of students in courses that most closely match their abilities results in a greater likelihood that these students will be successful in pursuing and completing their programs. Since fall semester 2004, students have been required to follow English and math course placement based on standardized test scores. Students who score within five points of the COMPASS cut scores may challenge the placement by taking their request to their respective Academic Counselor. Any student may retake COMPASS for a $15 fee. It is highly recommended that students wait three weeks from the original testing date to allow time to improve their skills. Students will then follow the course placement policy. English placement Guidelines for English placement are based on the following scores: • Students scoring 18 or above in the English and reading component of the ACT score will be placed in the English course appropriate to their course of study and established criteria. • Students scoring 17 or below in the English and reading components of the ACT score will take the COMPASS reading and writing assessment to determine the appropriate course placement. • The results of this assessment in combination with ACT English and reading scores will assist the advisor in determining appropriate course placement. Mathematics placement Guidelines for mathematics placement are based on the following scores: • Students scoring 20 or above in the mathematics component of the ACT score will be placed in the mathematics course appropriate to their course of study and established criteria. • Students scoring 19 or below in the mathematics component of the ACT score will take the COMPASS mathematics assessment test to determine the appropriate course placement. |

| 10.) How do I get books and/or tools for my son or daughter? You can purchase books and/or tools and general merchandise for your son or daughter through the NDSCS Bookstore. The Bookstore offers online purchasing for your convenience. If a student is registering during the summer, many of the textbooks, he or she may need are not available until closer to the start of school. Reserving your books online before picking them up will save you time. Your students book will be sent aside and ready when you go to pick them up. | 11.) Should I send money to school with my son or daughter? If your student is receiving financial aid, their financial aid will not be available until approximately 30 to 45 days after the start of school. In addition, if you son or daughter is working on campus or off campus, he or she may not receive a paycheck for a period of time. You may want to consider opening up a local savings or checking account or providing your student with a check card to have access to money. |

| 12.) My son or daughter is having problems with his or her roommate? If your son or daughter is having problems with his or her roommate, he or she may visit with the resident assistant on the floor of his or her residence hall, the resident director of that hall or the student life assistant director located in the Student Center. | 13.) My son or daughter is having problems in class. Encourage your son or daughter to contact the appropriate dean’s office or his or her advisor. The deans' offices or advisor can assist the student with providing assistance, recommendation for student support services or the next step in the process. There are many student services available free of charge to assist personally, academically and career. |

Once, the release form has been signed, the appropriate deans office would be able to insist you with your inquiry. However, if your son or daughter is thinking about quitting school, please encourage him or her to contact the dean’s office to discuss their decision with an academic counselor. The academic counselor will be able to discuss options for the student, provide career counseling and assessment and or refer the student to appropriate offices. | 15.) My son or daughter would like to work on campus? NDSCS offers two types of workstudy positions on our campus. Some workstudy positions are dependent upon financial aid. If a student is award workstudy through their financial aid budget, an application for workstudy employment is included in their award packet. If you did not receive authorization for a workstudy position, he or she can still be considered for a position and must fill out a workstudy application.
