Pathway Program

Program Overview

The Pathway Program is a collaboration between North Dakota State University and North Dakota State College of Science that prepares students for the academic rigors of college level course work.

Applicants who are not fully admitted to NDSU are eligible to participate in the Pathway Program. The program prepares students through academic readiness course work and a limited number of general education classes from NDSU. Classes are taught at NDSU and the NDSCS Skills and Technology Training Center located adjacent to the NDSU campus. Pathway students have access to all student services and activities at NDSU.

Course Placement and Selection

An interview and assessment are conducted by the Pathway Coordinator with students admitted to the program. Initial course placement is based on ACT scores for reading, English and math. Course placement determines the sequence of courses a student will need to complete to transition to NDSU. Students also have the opportunity to COMPASS test to verify placement.

The coordinator will work with you to place you in courses that are appropriate for your abilities and will best prepare you for NDSU general education courses. Some topics included in the academic readiness courses are effective reading, critical reading, college writing, composition lab, beginning algebra, intermediate algebra and study skills.

The Pathway Coordinator will help you identify NDSU courses appropriate for your intended field of study. As a Pathway student you will be limited to 12 total credits each semester with no more than five (5) credits at NDSU each semester you are enrolled in the Pathway Program. You must enroll in at least one (1) credit at NDSU to remain an eligible Pathway student. (Twelve credits are required for full-time status.)

Beyond your required course sequence, all Pathway students are required to enroll in College Study Skills through NDSCS and Skills for Academic Success through NDSU. The Pathway Coordinator and NDSU Office of Admission staff will help to identify general education courses to take in collaboration with your academic readiness courses appropriate for your intended field of study.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees for classes from both institutions are rolled into one bill administered by NDSCS. For NDSCS classes, you are charged the NDSCS per credit tuition and fee rate. For NDSU classes, you are charged a tuition and fee rate based on your state of residence. Rates for room and meal plans are applied based on rates at NDSU. Billing for both NDSU and NDSCS classes is done by NDSCS. Tuition and fees will be due in early September for fall semester and early January for spring semester. More information about tuition and fees, as well as billing, is covered in an orientation session.

Financial Aid

Federal financial aid is available for Pathway Program students. Contact the NDSCS Financial Aid Office for details.

On-Campus Living Requirement

Residence hall living provides students with excellent opportunities to meet new friends, become part of a learning community and enjoy a variety of educational, cultural, social and recreational activities. Pathway students (who graduate from high school in 2009) are required to live on the NDSU campus. You may submit your housing contract and a $50 refundable room reservation fee prior to making a commitment to the Pathway Program. The $50 reservation fee is fully refundable until July 1. An application for residence halls is part of the NDSU application packet. Applications also are available online at NDSU Residence Life. Since requests are honored on a first-come, first-served basis, you are encouraged to submit your contract early to better your chances of receiving the hall of your choice. For assistance in selecting a residence hall, look at the options online at NDSU Residence Life.

Orientation and Registration Program

Orientation and registration sessions are required for Pathway students. The orientation and registration session includes an overview of expectations for Pathway students, an introduction to NDSU student services, advising and registration. Orientation sessions are designed to help you feel a part of the campus community, make friends and assist with academic choices. Information on dates and sessions is sent out to Pathway students who have indicated an interest in the program beginning in April. Sessions take place in June, July and August.

Campus Services and Facilities

As a Pathway student, you will be able to access services on either campus including libraries, the NDSU Wallman Wellness Center, the NDSCS Blikre Activities Center and tutoring services. Pathway students can participate in student organizations and attend campus events such as athletic events, fine arts events and MU Live.

Transition to NDSU

Upon completion of the Pathway Program requirements, students may transition to NDSU to complete a degree. Students must successfully complete appropriate academic readiness courses and be in good academic standing at NDSU to be eligible to transition. The Pathway coordinator monitors students' progress and makes recommendations for transitioning.

General education courses taken from NDSU and NDSCS will apply to NDSU degree requirements. NDSCS academic readiness classes will not apply to your NDSU curriculum, but are required to transition to NDSU.
