for Peer Tutor and Study Group Leaders |

Policies and Procedures
• The tutor must keep an accurate record of his or her tutoring hours on a daily basis. You are making a commitment to be available to tutor whether anyone shows up or not. The tutor's folder can be kept on file in the Academic Services Center Room 215.
• Tutors should keep track of your time in minutes not hours. For example, if you tutor for 1 hour and 10 minutes, this gets documented as 70 minutes. You get credit for the time you tutor even if the student does not show up.
• Tutors can figure out how many hours they have tutored by adding up their minutes and dividing the total by 50. A peer tutor must tutor 24 hours for 1 credit and 48 hours for 2 credits.
• If tutoring sessions are held in a location other than the Academic Services Center, the tutor must fill out the Record of Attendance form each time and turn these into the Academic Services Center secretary on a weekly basis or as the sheets are completed.
• If you are unable to tutor during your scheduled time, you must contact your Peer Tutor Coordinator as soon as possible. If the Peer Tutor Coordinator cannot be reached, please call the Academic Services Center department secretary at 671-2622 or ext. 3-2622 so a note can be posted.
• Students tutoring privately for pay should not do this at the same time they are tutoring for credit.
• At the end of each semester, you must turn in your complete tutor folder to the Peer Tutor Coordinator to receive your grade. Grading is Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.

Log-Ins:
• The tutor must log in and out for each tutoring session. Tutors log in under the category "course" and "ASC 293." The tutor's log-in is different from the students participating in the study group.
• Students must also log in and out for each tutoring session they attend. They log in under the category "tutorial" and "course name and number being tutored," for example, ACCT 201 or CHEM 116. The tutor is responsible to ensure that students log-in correctly and should assist the student when necessary.

Facilitation:
• It is important to remember that you are not replacing the instructor. The student must meet the instructor's goals. The tutor helps the student clarify and meet goals.
• Do not do assignments for the students. Help the student accept responsibility for his or her own learning. Encourage the student to remain active in the learning process.
• Effective learning takes place when the tutor listens and the student can relate the information to the tutor.
• Show the student the steps that lead him or her to make his or her own discoveries and gather information independently.
• Try to make material relevant by using examples. Furnishing examples of concepts and practice materials helps students reinforce their skills. Go over notes with students, assisting with accuracy and completeness. Help the students with difficult terminology.
• Be familiar with Academic Services Center materials and encourage students to use our resources. Encourage students with weak study habits to take a study skills course or view study skills videos.
• Be willing to ask for help from the course instructor or Academic Services Center staff if there are concepts you do not understand.
• Although it is important to establish a "common ground," remember that covering course material is the primary reason for the tutoring session and to keep the sessions on track.
• The tutor communicates effectively with students in his or her group. Be careful that actions and words intended to reassure the student accomplish that goal. Do not begin statements with, "This is so easy..." You may be trying to help ease a student's anxiety, but this will only increase pressure on a student to "catch on" quickly.
• When tutoring several students at the same time, try to include everyone in the discussion or activity.
• The tutor has the ability to adjust to meet different students' needs. If you find that other days or times work better for your group, see the Peer Tutor Coordinator.
• Plan sessions, but adjust to meet the student's special learning needs as you become aware of them. Use labs, the asc, etc., as needed.
• Be able to adjust the pace of work to fit the student's needs. Feel free to schedule extra sessions if needed, especially prior to tests or finals. These extra sessions count towards your tutoring hours.
• Be willing to go over the material several times, but change the presentation method to fit the student's needs. Remember that several different approaches to the same information are valuable in remembering and understanding the material.
• The tutor maintains a professional attitude toward the student. The tutor will keep personal and academic information about the students they work with Confidential. The tutor will ask for permission from a student to talk to an instructor, if necessary, about his or /her work.
• Consult instructors for course outlines, guidelines and assignments. The instructors will be a primary source of information and suggestions for effective tutoring of their courses. Individual instructors may have different expectations of what a tutor should do, and the tutor should follow his or her wishes.
• Discuss any concerns or problems with the Peer Tutor Coordinator on an as-needed basis.
• Consult the Peer Tutor Coordinator if the student's problems are not academic. DO NOT attempt to act as counselor for personal problems. Refer the student to the Counseling Center on campus.
• Ask for guidance if a personality conflict develops between the tutor and the student.
• The tutor should not have unreasonable expectations for the students. You are not responsible for other students' success or failure. You just need to give peer tutoring your best effort.
• Always maintain a sense of humor and perspective.
After reading the Academic Services Center guidelines for peer tutors or study group leaders, please sign the tutor commitment and take the tutor or study group leader quiz.
