Four Lady Wildcats Go to Division II Schools

WAHPETON, N.D. – (May 8, 2009) - North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) Women’s Basketball coach Paulette Stein has announced that four players from this year’s team will be moving on to NCAA Division II institutions next season.

Natalie Giese, a 5’10” forward from Canby, Minn., will be playing for the Western State College Mountaineers. Western State is located in Gunnison, Colo., and is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers were 14-4 this season, which also marked Giese’s first year of competition at NDSCS. She was redshirted her freshman season. Giese averaged 9.5 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats and was one of the key inside players this season. She was named to the Mon-Dak Conference All-Conference Team and was a member of the Academic All-Conference Team; Giese was named to the President’s Honor Roll all four of her semesters at NDSCS.

A second member of Coach Stein’s team will be joining Giese at Western State; Fargo native Alicia Stensgard will suit up for the Mountaineers as well. Stensgard averaged 6.5 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats. During her freshman campaign, Alicia was named to the Mon-Dak Conference All-Conference Team, and she was also named to the President’s Honor Roll.

Former Lake Park Audubon player and Audubon, Minn., native Dawnelle Askelson will continue her career for the Minnesota State – Crookston Golden Eagles, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) members. The 6’0” forward was a mainstay in the Lady Wildcat starting lineup until a foot injury shortened her season.

The athletic and versatile Askelson played both inside and outside for Coach Stein’s team. She averaged 8.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this season.

Freshman Brittany Mayclin, a Bemidji, Minn., native and former Benilda St. Margaret student, has signed to play for another member of the NSIC. She will move forty minutes down the road and continue her career with the Minnesota State University – Moorhead Dragons. The 5’8” shooting guard averaged 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Lady Wildcats. Mayclin came to NDSCS in January 2008 as a redshirt freshman after completing one semester at Southwest Minnesota State University.

NDSCS is a two-year, comprehensive, residential college with its main campus located in Wahpeton, N.D., and a second site, referred to as the Skills and Technology Training Center, located in Fargo, N.D. NDSCS offers degrees, certificates, and diplomas in over 80 academic options in traditional career and technical studies as well as the liberal arts. The college also offers a variety of Distance Education courses. Approximately 95% of graduates from its technical programs find jobs in their chosen fields.

Unlike most two-year colleges, NDSCS boasts a university atmosphere for its students, complete with residence halls, 35 affiliated clubs and organizations, music groups, theater productions, intercollegiate athletics, intramural athletics, and numerous social activities.
