Released: 5/12/2009

WAHPETON, N.D. – (May 12, 2009) – North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) Basketball Coach Scott Schumacher has announced the first signing for his 2009 class. Ashby, Minn., senior Kurtis Mickelson has signed a letter of intent to play his college ball for the Wildcats.

The 6’11”, 300-pound senior averaged 23.5 points, 18.5 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game for Ashby and shot 59% from the field. For the season, Mickelson finished third in the state of Minnesota for total rebounds.

Schumacher is looking forward to having Mickelson for the next two years at NDSCS. He said, “I am elated to have the opportunity to help Kurtis continue to grow as a young man and a basketball player. Anytime you have a young man who is 6’11 and 300 pounds, who can run, has good footwork, and soft hands, the sky is the limit.”

Away from the court, Mickelson is his baseball team’s starting third baseman; he also plays first base and pitches. Mickelson was also a member of the Ashby football team; he played tight end.

His parents are Vince and Karla Mickelson and he has two brothers – younger brother Riley is a freshman at Ashby while older brother Davis is a football player at Bemidji State University.

Ashby Head Coach Ryan Risbrudt had this to say in regard to Mickelson’s future at NDSCS: "I'm excited about Kurt's opportunity at NDSCS. He is moving on to the next level and into a great program. The coaching staff there was in contact with me all season and I know they are also very excited to have Kurt as a part of their program. Ilook forward to watching Kurt play at Wahpeton and wish him and the staff there the best of luck."

NDSCS is a two-year, comprehensive, residential college with its main campus located in Wahpeton, N.D., and a second site, referred to as the Skills and Technology Training Center, located in Fargo, N.D.
