Volleyball falls to Mystics in thriller

WAHPETON, N.D. – (October 15, 2009) – In a match that saw numerous lead and momentum changes, the Mystics of Bismarck State College defeated the North Dakota State College of Science volleyball team, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 13-15 on Wednesday evening.

Neither team led by more than three points in the first game, until a Marisa Rauhauser kill for Bismarck State capped a 5-2 spurt to tie the match at nine. Back-to-back kills by Sara Opp and Taylor Hart gave the Wildcats a brief 11-9 lead. NDSCS either led or tied for most of the match, until an NDSCS attack error and a Shannon Schmidt kill gave the Mystics a 21-19 lead. The teams traded points until the final tally of 25-23.

In the second game, Opp and Hart each had four kills, leading NDSCS to the win. After an Opp kill gave NDSCS a 2-1 lead, the Mystics went on a 7-3 run to take an 8-5 lead capped by an attack error and a passing error. Hart then had had three straight kills, and Opp had another kill, helping the Wildcats to a 9-8 lead. With the score at 20-15 after a Kayla Dougherty ace, the teams then traded points until NDSCS posted a 25-19 win.

The Wildcats got out to a 7-4 lead after a BSC error in the third game. Like the first game, BSC came back and tied the match at ten on a Schmidt kill. The teams fought back and forth with neither gaining a definitive advantage until the score was tied at 18. NDSCS then went on a 5-0 run, capped by a number of Bismarck State errors to lead 23-18. After a Mystic timeout, BSC scored the final seven points of the game, ending it on a service ace.

Reardon had four of her match-high kills in the fourth game as NDSCS raced to an 11-3 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-13 win and forcing a fifth game.

In the fifth game, it looked as though Bismarck State might run away with it, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. NDSCS fought back to get the game to 10-11 on a Hart kill. After a BSC timeout, the Mystics took a 12-10 lead on a Jess Sitz kill. NDSCS then took a 13-12 lead, but a Rauhauser kill tied the match at 13. The match ended after a four-hit violation and an attack error by NDSCS, 15-13.

For the match, Reardon led the team with a double-double of 19 kills and 15 digs. Hart also had a double-double with 15 kills and 22 digs. Opp chipped in with 18 kills. Reardon and

Dierks led the team with three and two blocks, respectively.  Libby Augedahl led the defense with 26 digs, and Kayla Dougherty led the team with 55 assists.

NDSCS fell to 17-6 on the year, and 4-2 in Mon-Dak Conference play. The team will travel to Morris, Minn., for a 4 p.m. match with the University of Minnesota-Morris on Thursday.
