Electrical Technology

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are your "typical" students?
We don't feel that there is such a thing as a typical student. Although the majority of our students enter the program directly out of high school, a good portion are individuals who have been working in industry for a number of years and for one reason or another decided to pursue a degree in Electrical Technology.

How long does the course of study last?
The Electrical Technology program may be completed in four semesters. There are, of course, exceptions. Some of our students have completed college credit work at another institution that may transfer to NDSCS. It is possible that these transfer credits could satisfy some of the requirements of the Electrical Technology curriculum and that student could complete the program in less than four semesters. Another exception would be the student who has been away from school for many years, and would like to return to earn a degree in Electrical Technology. We have established special schedules, based on a three year track, that allow these folks to get back up to speed on skills such as math and reading if needed.

What kind of jobs are available upon graduation?
Graduates of the Electrical Technology program find employment throughout the electrical industry. Some of the areas our graduates are working in are: construction electrician, power generation, utility company, electrical maintenance technician, wiring systems design, process control, and custom machine/control fabrication. Job opportunities for graduates of the Electrical Technology program historically have exceeded the number of graduates.

Where is the department located?
The Electrical Technology Department is located in Barnard Hall.

My basic reading/math skills are a bit rusty. Will I have trouble with the Electrical Technology classes?
Probably not. Each applicant for Electrical Technology is tested in the areas of reading and math before actually starting the program. If it should be required, classes may be scheduled through the Academic Services Center. Special classes may be arranged to get those basic skills back up to speed.
