INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL CODING
HIT Instructor/Student in Lab

This option is designed to prepare the student with the necessary skills to be employed as a medical coder in a
variety of health care settings including hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, long-term care and insurance companies.

Coding guidelines will be studied in detail, as well as concepts in insurance and reimbursement, including the various prospective payment systems and managed care systems.

Students will apply knowledge of disease processes and procedural techniques to coding.

Professional Practice (Practicum): The program includes a practicum experience in a health information department focused on providing hands-on coding experience.

Delivery Options: Students can complete the entire program via web-based instruction from a location of their choice. Students may come to campus and take their general education course in a traditional classroom. The HIT courses will be taught using web-based instruction.

Award: Upon successful completion of the required courses, students will be awarded a Certificate in Health Information Technician with emphasis in Medical Coding.

The Medical Coding Program component is approved by the American Health Information Management Association.
Approved coding programs are recognized as offering quality coding instruction.
