INTRODUCTION TO THE HEALTH
INFORMATION TECHNICIAN
PROGRAM

The Health Information Technician Program is designed to meet the increasing demand for professionally trained health information technicians in a variety of health care settings. Health Information Technicians organize and analyze information needed for reimbursement, planning, marketing, risk management, quality management, statistics and research; maintain confidentiality of patient information, control the use and release of health information; compile health care and administrative statistics; code clinical data using appropriate classification systems, analyzing health records according to standards; analyze and implement medical, administrative, ethical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements.

On campus students are provided with classroom and laboratory experiences. Students in the Health Information Technician Program will participate in two professional practice experiences in health information departments.

Students may take the Health Information Technician Program via the internet or may come to campus. Those who come to campus will take their general education courses in a traditional classroom. Their Health Information Technician courses will be taught using web-based instruction.

Distance (online) students have access to online laboratory materials, including medical record and software applications. Microsoft Office Suite software is required for online students.

Upon successful completion of the required courses, students will be awarded an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Health Information Technician.
