Entry Level Outcomes/Competencies of Graduates

 

Upon completion of the first year of the practical nursing curriculum and graduation the student/graduate under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced practice registered nurse, or licensed practitioner will be able to:

  Identify human needs, developmental levels and adaptation styles of the biopsychosocial, spiritual and cultural being in an ever changing environment while considering societal factors which influence the client internally and externally.    Apply theory of human needs, developmental levels and adaptation modes in the integration of the client/patient as a biopsychosocial, spiritual and cultural being while recognizing learning needs and participating in client teaching.

 
  Demonstrate through written activities and patient care, application of nursing process utilizing scientific principles to assist in meeting client/patient needs and expected outcomes.    Utilize the nursing process to plan and safely manage the biopsychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of the client/patient and their support systems within their environment and health care settings utilizing current knowledge base of nursing practice.

 
  Describe the ethical and legal responsibilities of the licensed practical nurse, i.e. maintain confidentiality, recognize capabilities and limitations in accountability for their own attitudes, behaviors and interventions.    Practice within the ethical and legal framework of the practical nursing profession as directed by the Board of Nursing; demonstrating protection of the patient/client confidential information, accepting accountability for nursing practice, and demonstrating responsibility for continued personal and professional growth.

 
  Participate in group and recreational activities within the college and/or community settings.     Participate in group and recreational activities within the college and/or community settings.

 
  Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills with the health care team while providing patient/client care and identifying advocacy needs.
 
  Utilize effective communication including patient advocacy concepts with the client/patient and follow established lines of authority to provide nursing care.

 
  Demonstrate progress in knowledge, skills and attitude toward preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurse and obtain employment in the nursing profession.    Successfully complete the nursing curriculum requirements securing employment in the health care delivery system as a Licensed Practical Nurse and/or articulate to another level of education.

 
  Identify critical thinking skills by expressing the significance of data, assessing credibility of information; and identifying theory needed to apply basic nursing skills to draw logical conclusions from presented data.     Demonstrate critical thinking skills through analysis, evaluation, inference, deductive and inductive reasoning.
