Financial Aid

Steps to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1:
Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) with the U.S. Department of Education for both parent and student. The PIN allows the student and parent to sign applications and promissory notes electronically. The process will take approximately seven days to receive a PIN.

Step 4:
Receive your results from the Free Application Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • If you complete your FAFSA electronically, you will receive an e-mail with a link to view or print a summary of your Student Aid Report in 1-2 weeks. You will need your PIN number to do this.
  • If you mail your FAFSA, you will receive your Student Aid Report in 3-4 weeks. You will want to check your Student Aid Report for accuracy. If there is an error, please contact the NDSCS Financial Aid office.
Step 5:
If you are selected for verification, the NDSCS Financial Aid office will request a copy of your tax return(s) and a verification worksheet.
Step 6:
In June, you will receive an award notice from NDSCS detailing the amounts and types of financial aid the college is offering you. Review and accept your award online as indicated on your financial aid award notice.
Note: Your financial aid will not be processed until you have accepted your award online.
Step 7:
Determine if you need additional resources above the financial aid on your award notice.
Step 8:
If you are receiving a student loan for the first time, you must complete an entrance loan counseling session. Students can do this at any time.

Step 9:
If you are receiving a student loan, you must complete a master promissory note. A promissory note will either be sent via mail or e-mail to the student by the guarantor for your lender.
  • If by mail, you must complete the entire master promissory note and return it in the enclosed envelope.
  • If by e-mail, you must go to the lender web site and complete, print and mail the master promissory note to the lender, or complete and electronically sign it using your PIN and electronically return it to the lender.
Step 10:
Most aid will automatically credit to your account at North Dakota State College of Science. Your remaining funds after paying your charges with NDSCS will be available at scheduled fee payment times in the fall and spring.
