Mildred Johnson Library

New Students and Parents

Welcome to NDSCS…
…And welcome to Mildred Johnson Library, your resource to information no matter what your program may be. We invite you to spend time in the library, whether studying, doing research, or simply taking a break from classes. The library has space for students to work individually or in small groups, a comfortable reading area with lounge chairs and a fireplace, and computer workstations for online work. We look forward to seeing all NDSCS students here over the coming year.
While we continue to have many traditional library materials, we also have many electronic versions of books, magazines and journals, newspapers, and other resources. Your Library Card is your student ID card, and your barcode number and your last name are your login to library services, once your card is activated by library staff.
Below is a summary of relevant library services, but be sure to look at the other pages for the Library Web site to get an idea of all of our offerings, services, and assistance.

  • It=s the student=s responsibility to know when items are due and to return or renew them. We do collect fines and may put holds on registration and transcripts for fines on items returned late.

Hold for non-return items
Students will be charged for items that are not returned. If any item is not returned on time, the student will be charged for the missing item as well as a processing fee. If the item is then returned, the charge will be reduced to the processing fee only, unless the item is damaged.
Records and registration will be held up if Library fees are not paid. Contact the staff as soon as possible if you have any questions. Like all college records, library records are confidential; and students are notified of any fees.

Library Collections
The Library has many different collections available, all based on the curriculum taught at NDSCS. The Library collection supports all the programs of the college. There are also leisure materials in the form of CDs, DVDs, Book Club fiction, graphic novels, and a variety of general interest materials.
The Library subscribes to all North Dakota daily newspapers, as well as some from bordering states. Weekly papers are sent without charge by their publishers. If yours is not among these, talk to one of the Library staff and a request will be sent to the newspaper.

Orientation
Students receive Orientation to the Library in English classes and may have instructional sessions in the library for other classes. In addition, Library Staff are available to assist with research.

Doing research and writing papers or other projects
All Library computer workstations are set up for doing research on specific databases, as well as searching for material on the internet, and are available for writing papers. E-mail and personal searching are also possible, based on availability of computers.

Accessing the Internet
All of our computers have Internet access using Internet Explorer.

The Wireless network across the college
In order to have access to the network students must have a network card. They will need to check with Computer Services to be set up properly.
