Former NDSCS basketball player Toriano Madison passed away in his hometown of Detroit, Mich., on Sunday, August 9.  The May 2009 NDSCS graduate was playing a pickup basketball game at a high school gymnasium when he collapsed on the court.

Emergency personnel were unable to revive Madison. The cause of death is pending.

The 6'3" 2007 men's basketball recruit helped the Wildcats win the Mon-Dak Conference championship, Region XIII championship, and District 11 championship earlier this year. He graduated in May with an A.A. degree in liberal arts and had been recruited by Mayville State University, where he planned to continue his education and basketball career.

NDSCS Athletic Director and Men's Basketball Coach Scott Schumacher was notified of the sudden death Sunday evening. Coach Schumacher remembered Toriano as "a wonderful young man."

"We are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of our teammate and friend," said Schumacher. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Toriano's family."

The Toriano Madison Memorial Scholarship has been established through the NDSCS Alumni Foundation. Donations to the scholarship fund may be dropped off or sent to the Alumni Foundation.

Condolences and memorials may also be sent to Toriano's family in care of:
