WAHPETON, N.D. (AUGUST 25, 2009)—Enrollment for fall semester at the North Dakota State College of Science is at a five-year high, with 2,525 students registering for first-day classes.  Enrollment for the first day of classes is 4.4 percent higher than 2008, or 107 students, and higher than fall semester 2005 by 8.7 percent, or 303 students.

Karen Reilly, NDSCS director of enrollment services, says the reason for the increase is the return of non-traditional students to classrooms.  “They want a safety net for themselves and their families,” says Reilly.  “The current state of the economy and the lack of jobs in their fields have prompted many to return to college.”

NDSCS enrollment also includes traditional students that Reilly reports is “holding strong” even though the number of high school graduates in North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Minnesota is declining.

NDSCS will announce official enrollment numbers for fall semester on the 20th instructional day of classes.

NDSCS is a two-year, comprehensive, residential college with its main campus located in Wahpeton, N.D., and a second site, referred to as the Skills and Technology Training Center, located in Fargo, N.D.  NDSCS offers degrees, certificates, and diplomas in over 80 academic options in traditional career and technical studies as well as the liberal arts. The college also offers a variety of Distance Education or Online courses through www.ndscs.edu. Approximately 95% of graduates from its technical programs find jobs in their chosen fields.

Unlike most two-year colleges, NDSCS boasts a university atmosphere for its students, complete with residence halls, 35 affiliated clubs and organizations, music groups, theater productions, intercollegiate athletics, intramural athletics, and numerous social activities.
