NDSCS Partner, Nebraska Bookstore Company, donates $50,000 to Stadium Project

The Nebraska Bookstore Company has donated $50,000 to the North Dakota State College of Science to be used for an on-campus athletic stadium renovation project. The total cost of the renovation project at the Earl “Skip” Bute Alumni Stadium is $1.2 million. The improvements to the sports facility, which is home to both NDSCS and Wahpeton High School sporting events, will include: a new retail outlet for the bookstore, new locker rooms, renovated public restrooms, and a renovated concession area.

"This much needed renovation of the stadium facilities will benefit both NDSCS, Wahpeton High School and the city of Wahpeton," said Dr. John Richman, NDSCS president. “We are very grateful to the Nebraska Bookstore Company for its generous donation toward this project."

NDSCS partnered with the Nebraska Book Company in June 2010 to operate the on-campus bookstore. Nebraska Book Company has several divisions and owns or operates over 300 stores nationwide.

Lady Cat’s small numbers allow Tetons to take over

The NDSCS women’s squad had a hard time on Thursday night against Williston State College, as they couldn’t handle the number of threats the Tetons had to offer. The Wildcats took another tough conference loss at home, 65-81.

The only lead that the Wildcats took was 2-0, where the Tetons took over with an 11 point run almost knocking the wind out of the home team. At the half, the Wildcats trailed 26-38.

Leading scorer for the Cats was captain sophomore Dericka Griffis with 24 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore Michelle Reif added 11 points, with three 3-pointers, and 4 steals. Kaylin Sheets added 10 points.

The bench scoring was the main factor that the Tetons took advantage with. Williston outscored NDSCS 40-12 from the bench and had a great shooting percentage of 59 to Sciences 36. The end score was a hard-hitting 65-81.

The Wildcats are now 18-10 and 4-4 in the conference. They travel to Bismarck State University for a important conference game on Monday evening at 6 pm.

NDSCS men get shocked by WSC shooting

The North Dakota State College of Science Men’s basketball team was taken back on Thursday evening as they faced Williston State College (WSC). The No. 9 Wildcats fell short at home breaking their 10 game win streak, 90-102.

The Wildcats didn’t expect such great shooting to come from the Tetons, but it was hard to match shooting percentages of 57 from the field and 52 from behind the arc. The Cats trailed at the half, 46-51.

NDSCS was led by Greg Tucker with 28 points, and 5 steals. Tucker knocked down 5 three-pointers throughout the game. Fred Joseph had a nice game going 6 of 8 from the floor, counting for 17 points and 4 assists. Tommy Woolridge also poured in 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Jon Mesghna had 14 rebounds.

Although bench scoring was almost even, 3 lead changes and 8 ties, the Wildcats took a tough loss to the Teton, 90-102.

The Wildcats are now 25-3, and still on top of the conference at 7-1. NDSCS travels to Bismarck State College on Monday evening, with the tip off starting at 8 pm.

NDSCS students finish No. 6 in National Residential Construction Management competition

Five students from North Dakota State College of Science recently traveled to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the Residential Construction Management Competition hosted by the National Association of Home Builders. The team finished in sixth place out of twelve teams.

Students completed a management project/proposal and submitted it to a group of construction company executives for judging. At the convention, students were able to defend their proposals to the judges in front of an audience.

“When we arrived for the competition, most of our work had been completed. The only thing left was our presentation to the judges,” said Kyle Nelson, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Casselton, N.D. “This competition provides experiences that are difficult to grasp in the classroom. One of the best parts was seeing struggles and success other schools had and comparing it to those of our own,” said Nelson.

Joining Nelson in Orlando were Casey Johnson, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology and Construction Management Technology student from Grafton, N.D., Bailey Tennant an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Glendive, Mont., Ron Rudser, a Building Construction Technology student from Minot, N.D., and Tiffany Ahmann, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Mahnomen, Minn.

Also, Alex Palmer, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Glendive, Mont., and Adam Schneider, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Dickinson, N.D., assisted the team with preparation work before the competition.

This marks the fourth time NDSCS students have competed in the Residential Construction Management Competition. NDSCS was the only two-year college from North Dakota in the competition. Other schools competing were: Brigham Young University (Idaho), Cincinnati State (Ohio), Delgado Community College (Louisiana), Dunwoody College of Technology (Minnesota), Jefferson State Community College (Alabama), Linn State Technical College (Missouri), Montgomery College (Maryland), Northcentral Technical College (Wisconsin), Pennsylvania College of Technology, Santa Fe College (Florida) and Tarrant County College Southeast (Texas).

Dericka Griffis honored with Player of the Week

Sophomore Dericka Griffis of the NDSCS women’s basketball team was named Mon-Dak Conference Player of the Week for the week of February 6, 2012.

In two conference wins last week, Griffis scored 27 points and had 18 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist. The 5’10” center from Brooklyn Center, Minn., is averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game. She is shooting 45 percent from the floor and has started all 26 games this year for head coach Paulette Stein.

Griffis has helped her team to an 18-9 record on the season, 4-3 in the conference. The Wildcats face the Williston State College Tetons on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Clair T. BlikreActivities Center, looking to move the five game win streak to six.

Local choirs join for Spring Choral Festival

The North Dakota State College of Science Choral Festival will be held in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the Wahpeton campus on Monday, February 27, 2012.

Choirs featured will be the Wahpeton High School Concert Choir, the Breckenridge High School Concert Choir and the NDSCS Concert Choir. In addition to presenting two selections individually on the evening’s program, the choirs will combine for four selections.

Dr. Michael Weber, Associate Director of Choral Activities at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., will be the guest conductor for the Massed Choir. The Massed Choir will present four selections on the evening program: Shenandoah, Glory to God, from the Oratorio Susanna by George Frideric Handel, The Gift to be Simple and Stand By Me.

The Festival Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $2.00 for adults. NDSCS students with proper identification will get in free.

Men bring home a win from Turtle Mountain CC

The NDSCS men’s squad took another win, adding to their impressive 25-2 record. The Wildcats traveled to Belcourt, N.,D., on Monday to take on Turtle Mountain Community College. It was a battle, but the Cats came out on top.

Freshman point guard, Fred Joseph was the leading scorer with 19 points, three 3-pointers and four assists. Right behind was Jon Mesghna with 16 points and eight boards. Both Jeremy Newton and Joe Terfehr scored 14 points.

The final was 100-94; the difference maker was the night’s benchscoring with NDSCS shooting ahead of Turtle Mountain CC, 32-15.

The Wildcats are 25-2 and remain undefeated in the conference. The next opponent is Williston State College, a conference teamthat is currently in second place behind the Cats. The game is at home and starts at 8 p.m. Listen online at http://www.ndscs.edu/athletics/live/.

Lady Wildcats take down Turtle Mountain CC

The North Dakota State College of Science Lady Wildcat basketball team had a tough time getting into the flow on Monday evening, but they found a way to get their fifth straight win (92-52) over Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC).

In the first half, Kaylin Sheets led in scoring with 14 points, which helped the Cats take an early half-time lead, 40-29.

The Lady Wildcats' second half shooting heated up to 58 percent as a team, while a small TMCC roster was worn down with the Wildcats’ speed. The Lady Cats scored an impressive 33 points off TMCC turnovers. The combination of TMCC mistakes and hot shooting allowed NDSCS to open the lead to 40 points for a final of 92-52.

Sophomores and team captains Dericka Griffis and Kaylin Sheets took advantage of their size and both scored 24 points. Griffis finished with an impressive 11 of 15 from the floor and added six rebounds. Sheets hit a couple threes, grabbed seven rebounds, had five assists and stole the ball three times. Freshman Chanel Dickenson had a season high 15 points with eight rebounds. Kari Bergstrom chipped in 12 points.

NDSCS women are now 18-9 on the season and 4-3 in the conference. The Cats have another Mon-Dak Conference game this Thursday at home against Williston State College (WSC) and are looking for a rematch after a close, two-point loss to WSC earlier in the season. NDSCS becomes a NASA Aerospace Education Services Project member

North Dakota State College of Science has been admitted to the NASA Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP) Professional Development Network, a select group of high-quality professional development providers invited to collaborate with NASA Education. NDSCS will work to design and deliver ongoing professional development activities that will improve both teaching and learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

NDSCS will be given the highest priority for adding NASA resources to their professional development courses. For example, NDSCS will be able to have a NASA educational specialist available to provide hands-on sessions in the annual summer teaching academy.

NDSCS Applied Science and Technologies has been given this designation because of excellent past collaborations with NASA Education, including:

NDSCS faculty presentation at nanoscience technology workshop sponsored by the NASA Space Foundation

NASA Space Foundation training at NDSCS Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, or MEMS, (miniaturized mechanical and electro-mechanical elements) workshop

A partnership with the National Science Foundation on a grant written to enhance GUESS (girls understanding and exploring STEM science) program

NDSCS faculty presentation at Space Exploration Educators Conference

As a network member, NDSCS will help identify STEM professional development needs for teachers in the area, work with an AESP Education Specialist to develop workshops that align with local STEM needs, recruit teachers who match the professional development event’s targeted audience and provide workshop facilities that are conducive to teacher learning, with adequate classroom space and functioning educational technologies.

Each state is allowed three entities to become part of the professional development network. To date, NDSCS is the only North Dakota member.

About AESP: The Aerospace Education Services Project is a comprehensive project designed to reach out to the formal and informal education communities in all fifty states and the U.S. territories. The AESP staff consists of specialists who are professional educators assigned to every NASA center. The AESP specialists share NASA's use of emerging instructional technologies and the motivating outcomes of NASA's research, exploration and discovery with education communities and the public. The AESP primary focus is a professional development effort that provides in-service training for educators, classroom lesson modeling, distance learning events, pre-service training for university students, and identification of appropriate NASA education resources.

NDSCS Men’s basketball remains dominant

The Wildcats took another win last night against the Thunderbirds of United Tribes Technical College, 80-59. The Cats are 7-0 in the Mon-Dak conference and have a nine-game winning streak.

Jon Mesghna and Tommy Woolridge both scored nine points in the first half, putting the Wildcats at a nice lead of 42-27.

The game had even scoring for NDSCS, which made it tough for the Thunderbirds to catch up. Joe Terfehr came alive in the second half with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Jeremy Newton hit a couple threes going four of six from the field. Mesghna finished with 12 points.

NDSCS men’s squad is now 24-2 on the season and still dominant in the conference at 7-0. The team travels on Monday to play Turtle Mountain Community College at 8 p.m. after the women’s team.

Wildcat women stay hot, win over United Tribes

The NDSCS Lady Wildcats continue to climb their way back near the top of the conference with their fourth straight win against United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) last night at home. NDSCS took the lead from the beginning and never let it go.

Kaylin Sheets led the way again for the Wildcats with 14 points in the first half, putting NDSCS up 28-20.

Throughout the rest of the game, the Wildcats picked up their offensive game and at one point, spread the lead to over 20 points.

Dericka Griffis poured in a total of 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sheets finished with 16 points.

Ariel Running Bear of Breckenridge, Minn., and Sierra Benning, of Clarissa, Minn., both added 7 points.

The final was 67-48.

NDSCS Lady Cats (17-9) have won four straight conference games, putting them at 4-3. They travel to Belcourt, N.D., to take on Turtle Mountain Community College on Monday, February 13 at 6 p.m.

Give Kids a Smile day provides nearly $11,000 in free dental care

Give Kids a Smile^®day at the North Dakota State College of Science provided free dental care worth nearly $11,000 to 40 area youth in early February at the NDSCS Wahpeton Campus. Local and regional dentists, hygienists and assistants spent the day with NDSCS Allied Dental Education faculty and students to help provide services to area children in need. Services included dental exams, radiographs, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants and fillings.

“It was an exciting, productive day in our dental clinic. The event is a great educational experience for our students and we are so thankful for the help and support of area volunteers. Their time, talent and supplies were critical to the success of this event and we are very fortunate to have their support and assistance,” said Lucinda Johnson, NDSCS GKAS Program Coordinator.

Local and regional volunteers teamed up with 40 students and five faculty and staff members from the NDSCS Dental Education team to ensure each child received a high level of dental care.

Volunteers included: dentists: Dr. Steven Diekman of West Fargo, N.D., Dr. Travis Olson of Fargo, N.D., Dr. Francis Zeck, Jr. of Lisbon, N.D., and Dr. Kenneth Weidman of Breckenridge, Minn.; hygienists: Barb Nelson and Brittany Summerville of Breckenridge, Minn., Judy McDougall and Kirsten Lathrop of Wahpeton, N.D., and Kimberly Yineman of Bismarck, N.D. Donations were received from ADA/Henry Schein, Patterson Dental, North Dakota Dental Foundation, the participating dentists and the NDSCS Dental Department.

The total service value was estimated at $10,988.

About Give Kids a Smile: Give Kids a Smile is an annual event, usually held on the first Friday in February, when thousands of the nation's dentists and their dental team members provide free oral health care services to children from low-income families across the country. The American Dental Association's Give Kids A Smile program enhances the oral health of large numbers of children in need. NDSCS Theater presents Doc, Doc... Goose!

Performances held February 9-10 at 7 p.m., February 11 at 2 p.m.

North Dakota State College of Science theater presents “Doc, Doc… Goose!” written by Patrick Rainville Dorn. The production is directed by Jacqueline Kaler, and produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., in Englewood, Co.

The play depicts Mother Goose, a doctor who went to medical school and opened up a clinic in Nurseryland. The poor nursery rhyme characters are plagued with freak accidents. A typical morning in Dr. Goose’s clinic includes a cow with a sore calf from moon-jumping, a daredevil who burns his seat jumping over candlesticks and a blonde juvenile delinquent who breaks into bears’ houses. This imaginative weaving of nursery rhymes with modern twists offers something audiences of all ages will enjoy!

NDSCS Volleyball signs Evje

WAHPETON, N.D. — (February 9, 2012) — North Dakota State College of Science head volleyball coach Jane Passa has announced that Fosston, Minn., native Tara Evje has signed with the college for the fall 2012 volleyball season.

“Tara will be a great addition to our program,” said Passa. “She is a solid player and we’re looking forward to having her athletic presence and experience on the court.”

Evje is a 5-11 middle and outside hitter. She was a four-year letter winner and starter under Coach Sarah Dryburgh at Fosston High School.

Evje received a number of accolades in her prep-career, including All-Conference and Best Offensive Player in 2009 and 2010. She received the Pine to Prairie Player of the Week nod for the week of Sept. 20, 2010 and played on “Black Ice,” an elite club team in 2009 and 2010. Tara set a Minnesota state record for number of aces in one game (18).

As a captain in her senior season (2011), she was named Best Offensive Player, Strongest Server and MVP and was selected to play in the All-Star Game.

Also in 2011, “Breakdown Magazine,” an annual Minnesota volleyball publication, named Tara as one of the top 150 senior players in Minnesota. She also was ranked No. 3 in the state in service aces (150) in the 2010 issue.

Outside of volleyball, Evje is a four-year letter winner in basketball and softball. In basketball, she was leading scorer and rebounder her junior and senior year and hit the 1,000-point career mark during her senior season. She was featured as an elite player in the 2011 basketball issue of “Breakdown Magazine.”

In softball, Evje led in RBIs throughout her high-school career and had both the highest batting average and best on base percentage in 2009-10. In 2011, she was named Conference MVP.

Lady Wildcats upset top team in conference

The NDSCS Lady Wildcats won an important Mon-Dak Conference match against Lake Region State College on the road Monday evening, 63-61. It was a true test of strength and determination for NDSCS, as they had already taken a loss to the same team in the conference earlier in the season.

NDSCS led at the half, 35-29, but with five minutes remaining, found themselves without star guard Kaylin Sheets after she fouled out. Mimi Reif came off the bench and hit a crucial three-point shot, giving the Cats a much-needed boost and a one-point lead. Lake Region couldn’t put anything together in the final seconds and the Lady Cats took the win.

Dericka Griffis played strong throughout the game on both ends, 22 points and 11 rebounds. Kaylin Sheets was limited to 24 minutes with the foul trouble, but still found a way to score 15 points and dish out seven assists.

NDSCS (16-9) are now 3-3 in the Mon-Dak Conference. The next conference game is Thursday at home against the Lady Thunderbirds of United Tribes Technical College at 6 p.m.

No. 9 NDSCS continues to win, beats Lake Region 69-65

The NDSCS Men’s Basketball team keeps moving up in the NJCAA national poll, as they currently sit at No. 9 after winning over Lake Region State College.

The Cats led at the half, 37-31, but Lake Region was hungry to take the lead and poured on the pressure in the second half.

The Wildcats were down seven points with under two minutes to play, but Greg Tucker came up big, making two consecutive three-pointers and diminishing the Lake Region lead.

Down by one, the Wildcats changed the defense and forced the Royals into a few missed shots and crucial mistakes. NDSCS made enough end-of-the-game free throws to put them up by four and take the win, 69-65.

NDSCS played together as team, with four players in double figures. Tommy Woolridge led in scoring with 17, Dantrell Edwards added 12 and Jon Mesghna had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Greg Tucker added 11 points and six assists.

The team is now 23-2 and 6-0 in the Mon-Dak Conference. The Wildcats next game is at home on Thursday, Feb. 9 against United Tribes Technical College.

North Dakota Retention of Graduates at Highest Level

BISMARCK, N.D. – Almost 68 percent of North Dakota University System’s 7,884 graduates from 2009 were employed or re‐enrolled during the 2010 academic year – the highest state retention rate since an annual “Follow‐Up Report” began. The number of graduates retained totaled 5,260.

The report, released by NDUS and “Follow‐Up on North Dakota Education and Training,” found that 2009 graduate retention rose 3.5 percent to 67.7 percent from 64.2 percent in 2008 and 5.2 percent from 2007 (62.5 percent). “Economic climate, diversity and opportunity contributed to the increase,” said William Goetz, North Dakota University System chancellor. “Other factors are the increased role of our community colleges, quality of life and the increased opportunity and appeal of our graduate programs which has increased growth at our research universities.”

While 7,884 individuals graduated, 802 of those students also earned second degrees and another 1,927 earned minors. The prevalent choice of graduates was a baccalaureate degree (55.6 percent). Twenty‐six percent earned undergraduate certificates, diplomas and/or associate degrees. Almost 15 percent earned graduate degrees and 3.4 percent earned professional degrees.

Within a year of graduation in 2009, 63.1 percent of those students (4,972) were employed in North Dakota. Gender breakdown of graduates was 34 percent female and 29.1 percent male.

The report includes other data such as the percentages of graduate by age:

Between 20‐29 (81 percent),

30‐39 (10.1 percent),

40‐49 (4.8 percent),

under‐20 (2.2 percent)

50‐and‐older (2 percent).

Accordingly, similar percentages were found by age groups employed in North Dakota. Additional data includes breakdowns by profiles such as ethnicity; in‐ and out‐of‐state residency; degree levels; and primary, secondary, minors or areas of study.

Spring enrollment shows continuing pattern of growth

North Dakota State College of Science today announced a 6.5 percent increase in spring enrollment from 2011. As of Monday, February 6, the twentieth instruction day of the semester, NDSCS has 2,811 registered students, an increase of 172 students, compared to one year ago when 2,639 students were enrolled.

In the past four years, NDSCS spring enrollment has increased 23.7 percent from 2,272 students in 2009 to 2,811 in 2012.

“We are encouraged that more students, parents and high school counselors are hearing the message and understanding that two-year college certificates and degrees can lead to high-paying careers,” said John Richman, NDSCS president.

The spring 2012 student body includes:

57 percent full-time students, 43 percent part-time students

1,374 full-time students enrolled on the Wahpeton campus

881 students living on the Wahpeton campus

70 percent of students are from North Dakota

Students from 51 of the 53 North Dakota counties

29 students from 13 foreign countries, including Canada

1,703 first-year students, 1,108 second-year students

Several factors have contributed to the surge in enrollment, including the demand for highly-trained workers in western North Dakota, the impact of the national economy and greater awareness of job placement for graduates of two-year colleges. NDSCS’ 2011 graduate placement rate was 99 percent, meaning the graduates are employed or continuing their education. Seventy percent of the students found employment in North Dakota or transferred on to a North Dakota four-year university. Women's Basketball Profile: NDSCS Lady Wildcats

After losing four of their first seven games to begin 2012, the North Dakota State College of Science Lady Wildcats are looking to get back into the Mon-Dak Conference race.

Last two games

NDSCS has earned their first two wins of the conference season during the past week (January 30 - February 5). The Lady Wildcats improved to 2-3 in the Mon-Dak Conference with victories over Bismarck State College (82-74) on January 30 and Dakota College Bottineau (72-66) on February 2.

In the game against Bismarck State, NDSCS rallied late in the game to pick up the victory. The game was tight throughout as there were eight lead changes and six ties in the game. Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats was freshman Katie Wangberg with 14 point on 6-of- 7 shooting. Wangberg also grabbed four rebounds and came up with three steals. Sophomores Kaylin Sheets and Michelle Reif each contributed 13 points for NDSCS. Sheets also added four rebounds and five assists while Reif came up with four steals. Sophomore Dericka Griffis and freshman Chanel Dickenson hauled in 9 and 7 rebounds respectively.

NDSCS won their second straight game with a 72-66 victory over the Dakota College Bottineau. Griffis, who finished the game with 20 points and 7 rebounds, contributed 12 points in 12 minutes of action in the first half to propel the Lad Wildcats take a 37-32 lead into halftime.

Sheets, who leads NDSCS in scoring with 14.8 points a game, came alive in the second half as she continuously drove to the bucket. Sheets, who was 6-of-6 from the foul line, finished the game with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Freshman point guard Sierra Benning contributed 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

The Lady Wildcats, 15-9 overall, have had an up-an-down season in 2011-12. NDSCS has had two winning streaks of at least three games with their longest being six-games. Although the Lady Wildcats haven't lost more than two in a row, they have gone 2-4 in six-game stretches twice.

In addition to leading the team in scoring, Sheets leads the team in rebounds (5.9) and assists (3.3) per game. The Lady Wildcats other top scorers include Griffis (11.3 PPG and 5.7 RPG) and freshman Katie Campbell (9.5 PPG).

Lady Cats push for another conference win, defeats Bottineau

The North Dakota State College of Science Lady Wildcats took on Lumberjacks from Dakota College of Bottineau and to gained another conference win.



Dericka Griffis, a sophomore from Brooklyn Center, Minn., helped the Wildcats get ahead in the first half with a contribution of 12 points in 12 minutes of play, putting NDSCS up 37-32.



Kaylin Sheets came alive for the Cats in the second half, driving to the basket and drawing fouls. Sheets finished with 22 points, made all six free throws, grabbed nine boards and had four assists. Griffis finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Freshman point guard Sierra Benning had a good night in rebounding with nine and also had six assists.

At the end of regulation, NDSCS finished on top, 72-66.



The Lady Cats are now 15-9 for the season and are climbing up the conference at 2-3. NDSCS tips off with the Lake Region Royals on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. at their place. The game will be broadcasted at http://www.ndscs.edu/athletics/live/

NDSCS Men’s team now 22-2, unbeaten in conference

The Wildcats of North Dakota State College of Science took down the Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks, 86-70, marking the win No. 22 this season and remaining untouched in the conference.

The Cats were down in the first half, but the strong play from Jon Mesghna pulled the Wildcats along, as he contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. NDSCS was within three points at halftime, 36-39.

The Wildcats took over in the second half, shooting over 40 percent from behind the three-point line. Tommy Woolridge poured on the points in the second half, adding 30 points with a total of six three-pointers. Mesghna was perfect from behind the arc going four-for-four, finishing with 21 points and 13 boards.

The Wildcats remain unbeaten in the Mon-Dak Conference at 5-0 and 22-2 on the season. NDSCS travels to Devils Lake, N.D., to face the Lake Region Royals on Monday evening at 8:30 p.m. after the women’s game. The game will be broadcasted at http://www.ndscs.edu/athletics/live/

Funds will be used to upgrade College’s dental clinic technology in Wahpeton

The Otto Bremer Foundation, majority owner of Bremer Bank, recently donated $120,000 to the North Dakota State College of Science Alumni Foundation. The funds will be used to update the technology and facilities in the NDSCS Allied Dental Education Clinic in Wahpeton, N.D.

“Bremer’s generosity will provide a substantial amount of technology to our dental clinic,” said NDSCS President John Richman. “Donations such as these offer our students hands-on training with the most relevant technologies and also assist the college in adding great value to the classroom experience and ultimately, the state’s workforce.”

Through the combination of donation, grant and fundraising dollars, the NDSCS dental department will be able to upgrade dental chairs and technology, reach more of the community to provide general services and help an increased number of underserved children at the annual Give Kids a Smile event.

Sheets named Mon Dak Conference Player of the Week

Kaylin Sheets of the NDSCS women's basketball team became the first Lady Wildcat recognized as the Mon-Dak Player of the Week this season.

Exactly a year ago, Sheets received the same honor as a freshman. Sheets, a 5'8" guard from Moffit, N.D., averaged nearly 26 points and seven rebounds per game, as the Lady Cats defeated Jamestown College JV and fell short to Williston State College on the road last week.

Sheets has become a great leader for the Cats and this recognition is well-deserved.

Sheets shot 85 percent from the field and 78 percent from behind the three-point arc in the past two games.

The Lady Cats have a record of 14-9 overall with a 1-3 conference mark. NDSCS plays on the road tonight against Dakota College at Bottineau and again on Monday against Lake Region State College.

Lady Wildcats overcome Bismarck State College Mystics

North Dakota State College of Science women’s team rallied in a close conference match with eight lead changes and six ties on Monday night against the Bismarck State College (BSC) Lady Mystics. The Lady Cats were successful in the end in front of a home crowd, 82-74.

Freshman guard Katie Wangberg, Pine River, Minn., led in scoring with 14 points, going six of seven in field goals, adding four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Kaylin Sheets came alive in the second half, scoring 13 points, grabbing four rebounds and adding five assists. Sophomore Mimi Reif, Mounds View, Minn., also contributed with 13 points and four steals.

Dericka Griffis and Chanel Dickenson controlled the boards with nine and seven, respectively.

NDSCS Women are now 14-9 on the season and 1-3 in the Mon-Dak Conference. The Lady Cats face Dakota College at Bottineau on their court Thursday at 6 p.m. and look for another conference win.

Wildcats grind out another win, defeat Bismarck State 77-61

North Dakota State College of Science men's basketball continued to improve their record with their most recent win over Bismarck State College (BSC).

BSC fought to stay within ten points in the first half, but had a hard time due to the quick scoring of freshman guard Fred Joseph from New Iberia, LA. Joseph was 5 of 8 with 14 points in the first half alone. Tommy Woolridge also poured in 14, helping the score to 44-31 at the end of the first half.

Also contributing for the Wildcats was sophomore Joe Terfehr with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Jon Mesghna had a good night on the boards with 15 and added 9 points. In point leaders, Joseph finished with 20 and Woolridge with 17.

The Wildcats are now 21-2 and 4-0 in the conference and are ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA polls. The Wildcats play next at Dakota College at Bottineau on Thursday, with tip off starting at 8 p.m.

Wildcats jump to No. 12 in latest NJCAA poll

Head coach Scott Schumacher and the NDSCS men’s basketball team have jumped three spots in the latest National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) polls to No. 12.

The Wildcats have been in the NJCAA polls since December 13, 2011. Earlier in the season, NDSCS made the move from the ‘receiving votes’ category to No. 20 in the nation. This week, the Wildcats made another move, as it was announced that they would be ranked No. 12 after defeating Williston State College and Bismarck State.

This is the third time this season that the Cats have upped their ranking in the NJCAA polls.

The Wildcats currently sit at 21-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mon-Dak Conference. The Wildcats average nearly 84 points a game, while holding their opponents to just 69. As a team, the Wildcats have been shooting roughly fifty percent from the floor and out-rebounding their opponents by an average of seven rebounds per game.

NDSCS students to compete in National Residential Construction Management competition

Seven students from North Dakota State College of Science will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the Residential Construction Management Competition hosted by the National Association of Home Builders.

The competition will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9 during the International Builders’ show. Students have the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction company by completing a management project/proposal. Proposals are submitted to a group of construction company executives who act as judges. During the convention, students defend their proposals to the judges in front of an audience. The NDSCS team will have ten minutes of prep time, ten minutes to present and ten minutes to answer questions.

“This competition is a great real-world opportunity for our students to showcase the skills they have acquired at NDSCS. It also gives the students a chance to meet and network with industry members, and possibly to find a job offer,” said Shannon Mehrer, construction management technology program coordinator. “These students have shown great dedication to this project. The work is done outside of the classroom on their own time.”

Students who were interested in participating were interviewed and went through a faculty selection process. The follow students were selected to compete: Casey Johnson, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology and Construction Management Technology student from Grafton, N.D., Bailey Tennant an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Glendive, Mont., Ron Rudser, a Building Construction Technology student from Minot, N.D., Kyle Nelson, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Casselton, N.D., and Tiffany Ahmann, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Mahnomen, Minn.

Also, Alex Palmer, a Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Glendive, Mont., and Adam Schneider, an Architectural Drafting and Estimating Technology student from Dickinson, N.D., have been assisting the team.

The group has done some fundraising to off-set trip costs, such as a 50/50 raffle through the local Home Builders Association Club on campus. The North Dakota Home Builder’s Association of Bismarck donated $750 and the group received a $1,400 travel scholarship from the National Housing Endowment. The cost is approximately $550 per student.

This is the fourth time NDSCS students have competed in the Residential Construction Management Competition. NDSCS is the only two-year college from North Dakota in the competition.

Ages 3-20 welcome to register for free dental service this Friday, February 3.

The NDSCS Allied Dental Education Clinic will be participating in the annual American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) Day on February 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the NDSCS Dental Clinic in Wahpeton, N.D. This nationwide event designates a day for free dental care for those ages three to 20 who may have difficulty accessing dental care. The clinic will be providing dental care to families with limited financial resources.

Services provided may include basic restorative procedures, simple extractions and patient exams. NDSCS Dental Students will perform cleanings, radiographs, sealants, fluoride application and oral health education. Over $20,000 worth of donated services was provided to local children in 2011 with the help of volunteers, local and regional dentists, hygienists, assistants and the NDSCS Dental Education Department staff and students.

“We are looking forward to helping children again this year and our goal is very simple - to provide quality dental services to those in need. We really are looking to give children, and their families, a reason to smile,” commented NDSCS GKAS Program Coordinator Lucinda Johnson.

Daily News: NDSCS Plans Residence Hall Renovations

Originally built in 1967 to house female students, Forkner Hall at North Dakota State College of Science is a traditional residence hall: long corridors, shared double rooms and community-style bathrooms.

Times have changed in the 45 years since the residence hall first opened its doors, and the two-year college recognizes that students' desires have, too.

“Today's student, unlike the student when I attended here (NDSSS) back in the early ‘70s, wants a different living quarters,” NDSCS President John Richman said. “They want more privacy. They want more individual space than what the students of my age and generation needed.” Forkner Hall, along with the nearly 60-year-old Riley Hall, has been regularly maintained over the years, but hasn't been renovated in recent history.

This year, however, NDSCS is prepping a multimillion dollar renovation project to turn the two halls into living spaces that meet the desires of its current generation of students. Those desires include more privacy, such as private bathroom spaces, and a shift to suite-style dorm rooms, the two-year college says.

"The renovation is really a part of our efforts to increase on-campus enrollment and provide a quality living and learning environment for our students," said Melissa Johnson, executive director of student and residential life.

"The privitization of the entire living experience is what's going to be a draw (for students)," she said. "I believe that's both going to recuit and obtain our student population because it's the type of living that they most desire to have on campus."

Nearly 1,000 of the more than 3,000 NDSCS students last fall lived in one of the college's five on-campus residence halls. The 45-year-old Forkner Hall currently houses 180 students. Riley Hall, a three-story building constructed in 1954, was formerly a residence hall but most recently houses administrative offices, such as the NDSCS Police Department.

As part of the $9 million renovation project, the double rooms and community bathrooms of the three-story, co-ed Forkner Hall will be turned into suite-style living quarters, "the type of living which today's students most desire." Johnson said. The more spacious rooms will consist of four people sharing two bedrooms, a bathroom facility and sinks.

"This will truly have much more of a homelike feel for students and be much more private," Johnson said.

"It'll be much quieter, much more well-suited to the type of student...who would be very dedicated and focused," Johnson said. "It will be a space made especially for them." The building will remain co-ed, alternating genders by floor.

In Riley Hall, the college will add 46 beds to the top two floors, to be known as the "honors floors," a living quarters for honors students currently housed in another residence hall. While the living quarters will be double rooms, both floors will offer a 4:1 student-to-bathroom ration, Johnson said.

Administrative offices scattered throughout the Wahpeton campus also will find a new home on the first floor of Riley Hall, bringing student services, such as counseling, health services and student and residential life, "closer to where students actually are living," Richman said.

The project also will result in new lounge areas and a nearby, full-functional kitchen for students living in the halls.

Together, the two buildings will hold slighly more beds than before (190), which will continue to meet the needs of the student population on campus, Johnson said.

In 2009, several NDSCS assessments showed the college had space in both the classroom and its residence halls for student growth, specifically to help fill certain workforce needs in North Dakota. NDSCS has steadily grown its on campus enrollment since then, but the college wasn't meeting students' desires for living spaces, Richman said.

"We weren't fully meeting that need, and that's the reason why we wanted to take on this project," he said.

Due to its sound financial health, the two-year college was able to take on a revenue bond to fund the $9 million project, Richman said.

Renovation is expected to start in late spring, and the new halls are slated to be occupied August 2013. Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, additional room to house students will be made in Babcock Hall and other residence halls while Forkner Hall is out of commission.

"We're very, very excited about the project," Johnson said, "and I think it's going to bring just a great deal of value to our students."

Lady Cats hurt by close, on-the-road loss to Williston

The North Dakota State College of Science Women’s basketball team traveled to Williston, N.D., on Thursday to play the Williston State College (WSC) Tetons.

The game was a back and forth battle from the tip-off. With just two seconds left in the first half, the hometown Tetons scored two buckets back to back and took the lead, leaving the Wildcats trailing at the half, 28-33.

Sophomore Kaylin Sheets led another great game with 21 points, five assists and four steals. Dericka Griffis followed with 17 points.

Despite the great contributions and fight, the Wildcats couldn’t top off the Williston Tetons and lost by a harsh two points, 66-68.

Wildcat Men glide to 20-2 with win over Williston State College

The NDSCS Men’s basketball team adds another victory to make it 20 wins on the season, as they took down the Williston State College Tetons. The Wildcats were relentless to win on the road and to remain undefeated in the conference where they are now 3-0. The final to Thursday night’s game was 94-83.

The Tetons came out strong to start off the game, with the Wildcats trailing at the half, 42-45.

The Wildcats came together to gain momentum, with the odds against them and a gym full of Teton fans. Tommy Woolridge came alive scoring a total of 36 points, nailing four three-pointers and making all six free throw attempts. Jon Mesghna also had a great night with 22 points, going 6 for 12 and tallied eight boards.

NCSCS pulled ahead by the end of regulation, 94-83.

The Wildcats are now 20-2 and also jumped up three spots on the NJCAA National Poll from No. 18 to No. 15. NDSCS looks to continue winning in Mon-Dak Conference play, as they face Bismarck State College at home this coming Monday at 8 p.m. Come show your support, as it is also Faculty Appreciation Night.

Kuntz to play LB at NDSCS

The Dickinson High football team’s defensive captain, Jamie Kuntz, is going to play linebacker for North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.

Kuntz said he decided to play for head coach Chuck Parsons and the Wildcats because of the team’s rich history.

“I think knowing they have great talent helped a lot,” Kuntz said. “It was a big part of going there. They have a winning program and they send kids places all the time.”

Making this decision was tough for Kuntz. He said North Dakota State wanted him to play fullback, but his heart is at linebacker.

“I really want to go Division I and I was talking to Minnesota and NDSU,” Kuntz said. “I got a pretty good scholarship at Wahpeton and I decided to run with it.”

Kuntz wants to major in Exercise Science, but NDSCS doesn’t offer that as a major. He plans on working on his general studies and starting his major after playing two years for NDSCS and transferring to another school.

Kuntz said the best part of going to NDSCS is that they send game film to Division I schools across the country.

“I think I have a good enough work ethic to go in there and do well right away,” he said. “They send tape to teams all across the country and then hopefully one is interested.”

NDSCS - Meeting Housing Demands for Campus and Community

The North Dakota State College of Science was given the go-ahead this week to embark on a $9-Million renovation of two residential halls. College President John Richman says the project will not only bring the rooms up to modern standards, it will also help continue the growth of the student population. Richman says a goal has been set to not only grow the school's enrollment but have 1,300 of those students living on campus. He says at that level, the newly renovated Forkner and Riley residence halls would have additional space...

"...The City has a need for Senior living quarters -- they're short on that piece. They're hearing from a number of seniors that reach a certain age -- 55 and older -- that their kids are all gone, they sell their home, and they want to stay in the community, but there isn't the appropriate senior living environment for that age group. And so they are having to leave the community and move to Fergus Falls or to Fargo. So, they have that need, we have the space, and Lutheran Social Service will be the funding and operating arm of that project."

Richman says the partnership with Lutheran Social Service will be a good match for the school and the residents...

"...Obviously, we have a full fledged kitchen... they may cater for meals, they may cater for I-T services, they may cater for maintenance and custodial services. We won't operate it. We will be, for lack of a better term, a land-lord for Lutheran Social Service to function. And, just so we've clear, this is not assisted living. This would be just Senior living."

Richman says while it's a new approach for the school, there are about three-dozen colleges in the U-S that offer a similar service.

Wildcat basketball moves to No. 15

The North Dakota State College of Science men’s basketball team made a move this week in the national polls, jumping up three spots from No. 18 to No. 15.

The Wildcats entered the National Junior College Athletic Association National Poll rankings just over a month ago at No. 18.

On the season, Tommy Woolridge of Chicago, Ill., has led the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game and has a .42 three-point shooting percentage. Holding down the inside are sophomore forwards Joe Terfehr of Breckenridge, Minn., and Jonathan Mesghna of Frankfurt, Germany, with 10 and 12 points per game, respectively. Both also average over seven rebounds a game.

NDSCS is currently 19-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Lady Cats fall short to Bottineau, turn around to win over Jamestown JV

Thursday night was a tough one for the Lady Wildcats, to say the least. The Cats not only took a loss from Dakota College at Bottineau (DCB) on their home floor, they also suffered an ACL injury from a prominent starter and a key role to the Wildcats’ success. NDSCS recuperated on Sunday and took the win over Jamestown College JV.

At the half against Bottineau, NDSCS trailed by only a point, but had a hard time finding an outlet to score throughout the second half. Katie Campbell was hurt during the game, a crucial ACL injury, taking her out for the season.

The Cats had the lead with 10 seconds left, but after a made DCB 3-point shot with just 10 seconds left, the Wildcats fell short by just two points, 49-51.

Leading for the Cats was Kaylin Sheets with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Campbell added 9 points and 3 assists.

On Sunday, the Wildcats took on the Jamestown College JV Jimmies, ending with a win, 86-63. Shooting was the difference in this game with a 3-point percentage over 50 percent and a field goal percentage of 47.

Kaylin Sheets, a sophomore guard who has been consistent throughout the season, carried the team on Sunday and led the great shooting. Sheets started the first half with no missed shots, and finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Sheets also hit six 3-pointers and went 11 for 13 in overall field goals.

Sierra Benning a freshman point guard from Clarissa, Minn., also had a nice night finishing with 15 points, going 6 of 8 on field goals and adding 4 assists.

The Lady Cats are now 13-8 on the season and look to get a winning streak going with the conference season in full swing. NDSCS women are 0-2 in the Mon-Dak Conference, but will fight to climb back to the top.

Mixed Blood Theatre’s Daughters of Africa visits NDSCS

Minneapolis’ Mixed Blood Theatre’s production of Daughters of Africa will be performed at North Dakota State College of Science in the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on Tuesday, February 7 at 2 p.m. This music drive history of the triumps and accomplishmentsof African American women was written for Mixed Blood Theatre by award-winning playwright Syl Jones. It is a striking collection of profiles of both famous and forgotten remarkable women, celebrated and overlooked by history.

Daughters of Africais an exuberant celebration fueled by the songs of Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah and many others. This one-woman show, directed by Warren C. Bowles features the incredible Thomasina Petrus, whose dazzling solo performance in this touring production has thrilled audiences for most of two decades.

Daughters of Africa is one of four culturally-specific productions toured annually by Mixed Blood Theatre, a Minneapolis-based multicultural theatre company founded in 1976. The others include According To Coyote, a collection of American Indian legends and stories; Dr. King’s Dream, a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr; and Hijab Tube, about elements of Islamic culture in 21^st Century America.

Wildcats win two, stand 2-0 in the conference

In their first home game of 2012, the NDSCS Wildcat men's basketball team hosted Dakota College at Bottineau. NDSCS jumped out to a commanding lead early in the game, and led at the half 50-27.

The Wildcats didn’t let up much in the second half. The end result was a win, 93-56.

Tommy Woolridge, of Chicago, Ill., led with 24 points and knocked down an amazing seven 3-pointers, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 4 assists. Jon Mesghna of Frankfurt, Germany, had 18 points and 7 rebounds.

On Sunday night, the Wildcats faced Jamestown College JV. The first half was evenly matched and a battle back and forth for the lead. At the half, it was just a one-point game, 32-31 in facor of NDSCS.

With two Wildcats with double-doubles, NDSCS deserved the victory in the end. Joe Terfehr, a sophomore of Breckenridge, Minn., played for the home crowd with 12 points, 11 rebounds and a couple of blocks. Mesghna scored 15 points and 10 rebounds. Greg Tucker, Chicago, Ill., and Woolridge both poured in 13 points. The final score was 72-67.

The Wildcats are now 18-2 and 2-0 in the Mon-Dak Conference. NDSCS will take on Williston State College this Thursday, January 26 at home beginning at 8 p.m.
