The plumbing estimator must have an extensive knowledge of construction, construction materials, methods and knowledge of construction practices and contracts. An estimator must be able to read and write bidding documents, and he should be able to sketch construction details. He should have a facility with measuring techniques and mathematics, and he requires a good general knowledge of economics and business. The estimator must be able to work alone and to make unilateral decisions on matters that are not real clear. This requires an ability to make decisions with whatever information is available, and later be able to say that this decision was the best decision in the light of those facts. Some of the subjects covered are: bidding strategy, site and public work, utilities, plumbing, process & industrial piping, detail hookups, materials, control sheets, production factors, computer estimating, budget estimating and many others.
