Academic Services Center
The Academic Services Center is committed to the philosophy that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and is dedicated to helping students develop academic abilities and discover their personal strengths.
The Academic Services Center works cooperatively with other college departments, high schools and funding agencies to provide a broad spectrum of educational courses, activities and services to improve academic achievement and to increase retention of students.
The purposes of the program are:
• to teach developmental courses and English as a Second Language;
• to provide academic support courses and services to students; and
• to offer college-level courses on a flexible schedule to non-traditional students.

Hours are:
Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Reading Lab, Library Room 223 - The Reading Lab provides students opportunity through computer/instructional courses to increase reading efficiency. Individualized assignments place emphasis on improving reading comprehension and rate. Based on entry-level assessment results, students are scheduled for ASC 82 Effective Reading and ASC 83 Speed Reading, but courses are open to any student who wishes to become a more effective reader.
Coursed include:
• ASC 82 Effective Reading; and
• ASC 83 Speed Reading.
Writing Lab, Library Room 222 - The Writing Lab offers walk-in instructional and computer support for English courses and for writing projects in any content area. English support includes literary analysis, essay writing, computerized study of vocabulary and English as a Second Language.
Math and Science Lab, Library Room 206 - The Math and Science Lab provides classes for students who are under prepared in math or science. Recommended courses may include:
• ASC 62 Medical Vocabulary;
• ASC 89 Math Companion Lab;
• ASC 90 Math Prep;
• ASC 91 Pre-Algebra;
• ASC 92 Beginning Algebra;
• ASC 93 Pre-Trigonometry;
• ASC 96 Pre-Chemistry; and
• ASC 97 Pre-Anatomy.
 
Walk-in help with science, math or math-related assignments is available throughout the day and in the evening.
Supplemental Instruction, Library Room 226 - Study services are available to all NDSCS students. These services include tutorial help in a number of courses such as nursing, history, psychology, accounting, individualized study skills conferences, group study sessions and required computer aided study that is requested by instructors. Self-assessment instruments are utilized to identify and develop effective study strategies.
The Supplemental Instruction Lab also offers developmental courses such as:
• ASC 70 Computer Prep;
• ASC 71 Introduction to Keyboarding; and
• ASC 75 College Study Skills.
Tutorial help is also available in computer related courses.
FLEXtime Lab, Library Room 226 - The FLEXtime Lab offers individually scheduled and self-paced education. FLEXtime courses are designed to provide an opportunity for people from the community and surrounding areas to take college courses during hours that will not conflict with family or work schedules. Accounting, computer, English, math and administrative assistant courses are available. These courses are primarily completed through independent study with support offered at the Academic Services Center.
Prior to registration, persons interested in a FLEXtime course should contact the coordinator. Information about the FLEXtime program and registration procedures will be given at that time. After students have been officially admitted to the college, they may register for a FLEXtime course. FLEXtime courses must be completed within nine months beginning on the date of registration. Students may be registered for no more than two FLEXtime courses at a time.
Under special circumstances, regular, full-time NDSCS students may register for a FLEXtime course. Interested students should see a division academic counselor for more information.
Test Center, Library Room 227 - Offers the following services: Proctored testing for on campus, off campus, and online students, COMPASS placement testing, and SAT and TOEFL testing.
Disability Support Services, Library Room 215 - Disability Support Services provides access to accommodations based on a student’s documented disability. Individuals with physical disabilities, hearing or visual impairments, speech or language impairments, learning disabilities (i.e. dyslexia, ADD/ADHD) or other health-related impairments may be eligible for services. An individual must have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities such as learning.
To receive services, a student with a disability must contact the Disability Services coordinator to:
• Self-disclose his or her disability;
• Fill out the Student Information Sheet and Release of Information;
• Provide appropriate documentation regarding his or her disability; and
• Request services and/or accommodations.
It is recommended students with disabilities visit campus prior to enrolling and contact Enrollment Services to schedule an appointment with the Disability Support Services office. The Disability Support Services office coordinates services with the Academic Services Center, Counseling Services and instructors to ensure equal access to academic programs.
Peer Tutor/Peer Assistant Program, Library Room 215 - Peer tutors and peer assistants are available for students needing academic support. Peer tutors facilitate small study groups, review course content, help with test preparation and promote study skills. Study sessions are scheduled based on student request and are posted in the Academic Services Center hallway. Most study groups meet weekly. The Peer Tutor/Peer Assistant Coordinator facilitates these activities.
College Prep Program - College Prep is a program designed to help students develop the academic skills needed for success in college and beyond. The program offers a combination of preparatory courses to strengthen an individual’s reading, writing, math, science, study and computer skills. The emphasis is placed on developing useful study strategies.
College Prep is a year-round program, but the most concentrated effort occurs during the summer. By taking required courses during the summer session, students are able to take a lighter course load during the following semester.
Summer Workshops - The Academic Services Center offers a variety of summer workshops. These workshops are held prior to fall semester and provide intensive review of needed skills and problem-solving strategies.
